 "The act of depositing the egg was assimilated to the 'first birth', or the natural birth of man. The egg melting corresponded to the supernatural birth of initiation. So the two main variants, the cosmic egg and the 'initiatory egg' are complementary. The first refers to the germ of the totality and the second to the germ of the spiritual rebirth, both at the level of the macrocosm. It is a very clear fact in alchemy, since the alchemic work is in a sense a cosmogony created in the laboratory. In Alchemy, the egg is the receptacle of that transformation, interior, from raw matter to philosophal gold, the so-called great work. In the alchemical process the egg is represented by the cooking container, from which, when the eagle or the phoenix will be levied, the soul will be finally free, like the butterfly coming out of chrysalis. This process is symbolized by egg rupture. This is why Easter, Renaissance and Resurrection Festival, connects to Western culture to the symbology of the egg. It contains in incubation in its shell the new man who waits to be freed and brought to light in a superindividual dimension.”
