Yersinia pestis - Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

"By the fourteenth century, however, the rapid population increase and economic boom came to a sudden halt. Already weakened by famine and malnutrition brought about by crop failures in the early 1300s, and often living in cramped conditions with poor sanitation and hygiene, Europeans succumbed in record numbers to the plague that hit dhe continent in 1348. Coming form Mongolia via the Middle East the virus Yersinia pestis which is transmitted by fleas  living on the blood of infected rats arrived in the bustling port cities of the Mediterranean first and from there spread quickly along the trade routes killing between a third to half of the population of Europe. .."
